We scored the 1,187 live apps in Shopify's SEO category from our own crawl, then re-read the 64 most-reviewed SEO apps live. Half the category's ratings belong to review apps, 425 apps now sell AI-search visibility, and two of the 64 have left the App Store.
Best Shopify SEO Apps for Google and AI Search
Search engine optimisation is the job, and Shopify's SEO category is where merchants go looking for help with it. Our index holds 1,187 live apps in that category, and the category itself is a poor guide. More than half of the 98,303 ratings it holds belong to apps that collect product reviews, because review stars are what shows up in Google results. Judge.me alone holds 48,894 of them. Meanwhile 783 of the 1,187 have never been reviewed at all.
So we scored the category from our own crawl. Then we re-read the 64 most-reviewed SEO apps on the live App Store on 22 October 2026, so the ratings and prices below are today's. Two of the 64 turned out to have been removed from the store, which says something on its own. Nobody paid to be in this list.
Five things to know before the list
Most of the SEO category is not SEO apps. Shopify files review apps here because star ratings in search results count as search visibility. That is fair, and if you have no reviews app yet it is the first one to install (we covered those in best Shopify apps for collecting product reviews). This post is about the rest: 696 apps whose name promises an SEO job, from meta tags to page speed to llms.txt files.
A third of the category now sells "AI search". Of the 1,187 live apps, 425 (36%) pitch AEO, GEO, llms.txt, ChatGPT or AI-search visibility in their name or tagline, and 97 mention llms.txt somewhere on the listing. Very few of them have a track record yet: 281 have never been reviewed, and only 26 have 50 reviews or more.
SEO apps are cheap. 647 of the 1,187 (55%) offer a free plan, and among apps with a paid plan the median cheapest one is $12.99 a month. On the shortlist below, paid plans start between $0.99 and $59 a month. Price is not the risk in this category. What the app does to your theme is.
Ratings will not separate them. 43 of the 62 apps on the shortlist show 4.8 stars or better, and 13 show a flat 5.0. We have written about why Shopify app ratings bunch up like this. The useful signals are elsewhere: how many stores run the app, what it costs, and what goes wrong when it fails.
SEO apps disappear. SEOLab, the third most-reviewed SEO app in our crawl with 2,851 ratings, is no longer on the App Store; its page now reads "not currently available on the Shopify App Store". SpeedSize, a smaller image and speed app, is gone too. Apps leave the store for many reasons and we do not know these ones. But if you run either, check what it left in your theme. An SEO app writes into your store, and a removed app no longer has an update coming.
Before you install anything: what Shopify already does
A lot of what SEO apps sell is already built into Shopify. Every store gets an automatic sitemap.xml, a default robots.txt, canonical tags, and an editable page title, meta description and URL for every product, collection and page. Images have an alt-text field and are served from Shopify's CDN in modern formats. URL redirects are built in, and Shopify offers to create one when you change a product's URL. Most current themes, including Shopify's free Dawn, already output basic product structured data.
For AI answers specifically, Shopify now has its own channel. Agentic Storefronts, in the Shopify admin, sends your product catalog to AI shopping assistants such as ChatGPT directly. Check which ones your store is eligible for before paying an app to do something similar.
So what the apps really sell is automation: writing titles and alt text for 2,000 products at once, finding broken links, checking for errors you would never look for. That is worth paying for once your catalog is large. On a 40-product store, an afternoon in the Shopify admin often does the same job.
The shortlist, by job
Sixty-four apps cleared the bar: the name promises an SEO job, and the listing carries at least 50 ratings. Two have since been removed, so 62 are listed below. Everything in these tables was read from the live App Store listing on 22 October 2026. Forty-three of the 62 carry Shopify's Built for Shopify badge, the one quality signal on a listing that an app cannot award itself.
"SEO" covers seven different products. Decide which job you need first. Installing two apps that do the same job (two suites, or a suite and a separate schema app) is the most common way to end up with duplicate meta tags and duplicate structured data.
All-in-one SEO suites
Meta titles and descriptions, alt text, structured data, broken-link fixes and a site audit, in one app. Most stores need one of these or none, never two. Tapita, Tiny SEO, Smart SEO, StoreSEO and Avada score highest because each pairs hundreds or thousands of ratings with a free plan and a first paid tier under $35. BOOSTER is the volume leader at 5,478 ratings, but its first paid plan is $39. Yoast, the best-known name in WordPress SEO, sits at 4.3 on 176 ratings here.

Page speed and image compression
These apps compress images, lazy-load them, preload pages or delay scripts. Speed matters for search, and image weight is the usual cause of a slow Shopify store. This is also where the riskiest complaints in our data come from (more below): an app that rewrites how your theme loads can make it slower or break it. Measure before and after.
| App | Score | Rating | Ratings | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avada Image & Page Speed Up | 91 | 5.0 | 771 | Free, then $19/mo |

Image alt text
Alt text describes an image for screen readers and for search. These apps write it in bulk with AI. They are cheap and low-risk, but check what they actually write. In one review, the AI's chatty preamble ("Sure! Here's a more optimized alt tag…") ended up in the alt text itself.
| App | Score | Rating | Ratings | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AltKing: AI Alt Text SEO & ADA | 74 | 5.0 | 234 | Free |
| SEO HERO AI Alt Text Generator | 57 | 4.9 | 178 | Free to install, then $5/mo |
| YT SEO Optimize Image Alt Text | 38 | 4.6 | 95 | Free, then $1.99/mo |
| ALT SEO: AI Alt Text Generator | 34 | 4.8 | 62 | Free, then $29/mo |
| ATAI ‑ AltText.ai AI Alt Text | 33 | 4.5 | 142 | Free to install, then $5/mo |
Structured data (schema and JSON-LD)
Structured data tells Google what a page is, which can earn rich results such as star ratings and prices in search. Your theme probably already outputs some. These apps add more types (FAQ, breadcrumbs, reviews, shipping and returns details) and fix errors. After installing one, run a product page through Google's Rich Results Test and make sure it shows one product, not two.
| App | Score | Rating | Ratings | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Webrex: AI SEO, Schema JSON‑LD | 86 | 4.9 | 845 | Free, then $9.99/mo |
| Schema Plus ‑ AI & SEO JSON‑LD | 78 | 5.0 | 593 | $10.99/mo |
| Ilana's JSON‑LD for SEO (TM) | 61 | 4.9 | 440 | $399/yr |
| GP JSON‑LD Schema & AI SEO | 31 | 4.9 | 56 | Free to install, then $8.99/mo |
Redirects, 404s and sitemaps
Shopify's built-in redirects cover a store that rarely changes URLs. These apps are for stores that rename, delete and migrate a lot: they find broken links, redirect them in bulk, and control what gets indexed. They are among the cheapest apps in the category.
| App | Score | Rating | Ratings | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sitemap NoIndex Pro SEO | 72 | 5.0 | 192 | Free, then $3.99/mo |
| Redirect Hero ‑ Fix 404 links | 63 | 5.0 | 160 | $2.9/mo |
| 404/301 SC Easy URL Redirects | 54 | 4.7 | 297 | Free, then $14.99/mo |
| SEOWILL ‑ 404 Link Redirect | 54 | 4.8 | 183 | Free, then $7.99/mo |
| Redirect Ninja ‑ AI 404 Fix | 36 | 4.8 | 65 | Free, then $9.99/mo |
AI search: llms.txt and AEO
The newest job, and the one with the boldest claims. These apps generate an llms.txt file, add structured data, ping search engines through IndexNow, and track whether AI assistants mention your store. Six of these seven launched in 2024 or later, and GPTLab launched on 5 June 2026.
Know one thing before you pay: Google has said its Search and AI features do not use llms.txt. Whether any AI assistant relies on the file is unproven. The free apps here cost nothing to try, but do not pay a monthly fee for an llms.txt file alone. What helps an AI assistant describe your products is the same thing that helps Google: clear product information, real reviews and correct structured data.
| App | Score | Rating | Ratings | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Avada AEO SEO Optimizer LLMs | 79 | 5.0 | 390 | Free |
| GPTLab: ChatGPT Claude AEO SEO | 71 | 4.9 | 346 | Free |
| IndexGPT: AI SEO for ChatGPT | 46 | 4.9 | 148 | $16/mo |
| FD: AI SEO & AEO LLMs, Agents | 46 | 4.9 | 74 | Free |
| Dondo: SEO, AI Search & Photos | 43 | 4.9 | 118 | Free to install, then $12/mo |
| Arc: llms.txt | 31 | 4.4 | 80 | Free, then $9/mo |
| InstaIndex: IndexNow & AI SEO | 30 | 4.7 | 62 | $1/mo |
SEO blogs and content
Blog builders and AI writers for content that brings in search traffic. Be careful with the fully automatic ones. Google's spam policies treat pages mass-produced mainly to rank as spam, whether a person or an AI wrote them. The negative reviews in this group say the same thing in plainer words: the posts read as generic. Use the AI for a draft and edit it yourself.
| App | Score | Rating | Ratings | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential AI SEO: AI Blog Post | 80 | 5.0 | 423 | Free, then $9.99/mo |
| Avada Blog SEO AEO Content | 79 | 4.9 | 563 | Free, then $14.9/mo |
| Tapita GEO Studio & AI Blog | 77 | 4.9 | 490 | Free |
| AI Blog Agent | SEO Auto Blog | 59 | 4.8 | 235 | Free, then $8.99/mo |
| Bloggle: SEO Blog Builder | 58 | 4.9 | 337 | $19.9/mo |
| Jolt: AI SEO Blog & Image | 24 | 4.5 | 69 | $10/mo |
What actually goes wrong: 252 angry reviews
We hold 5,877 crawled reviews for apps whose name promises an SEO job. 252 of them are one or two stars with text. Reading all 252 tells you more than any feature comparison.
Support comes first again. 81 of the 252 complain about a reply that was slow or never came. It is the same pattern we found across 2,797 bad reviews store-wide and in returns apps: merchants forgive missing features, but not silence.
The SEO-specific risk is damage. 28 reviews say the app made the store slower or broke something: a speed score that fell after installing a speed app, product photos left blurry by compression, a theme editor that stopped working, a checkout page that vanished. Apps with speed or images in their name account for a third of all the negative reviews, but more than half of these. Seven reviews describe trouble that started after uninstalling. Either code was left in the theme, or the reverse happened and every meta title the app had written disappeared with it.
And it fails fast. Half the negative reviews come in the first week, and the median is seven days. That is the opposite of returns apps, where the median was 120 days. With an SEO app, a trial is a fair test if you measure during it.
So test it like this
- Duplicate your theme before you install. In Online Store, then Themes, duplicate the live one. If the app damages anything, you can switch back in a minute.
- Run Google PageSpeed Insights on a product page, on mobile, three times before and three times after. Compare the medians. A speed app that makes the number worse should go the same day.
- View the page source after installing. Search it for
application/ld+jsonand<title>. Two product schemas or two titles mean two tools are doing the same job. - Ask before installing how uninstalling works. Does the app write titles into Shopify's own SEO fields, where they stay after you leave, or into its own layer, where they go with it? Does removing it clean its code out of your theme?
- Email support once with a real question and time the reply. 57% of these negative reviews got a public answer from the developer, so read how the vendor answers its one-star reviews too.
The honest part: no app can promise rankings or AI citations
We can measure how many stores rate each app, what it costs, and what merchants complain about. We cannot measure whether any of these apps moves your Google ranking. No listing can show you that, and an article quoting you a traffic percentage for an SEO app made the number up. The same goes double for AI answers. Nothing on these listings shows an app getting a store cited by ChatGPT or Gemini, and only 11 of the 252 negative reviews complain about "no results". That is not proof that the apps work. It mostly means merchants cannot tell.
The parts of SEO an app cannot do for you are the ones that matter most: products people want, descriptions written for buyers, reviews from real customers, and a store that loads fast because it is not carrying fifteen apps. Use an app to automate the busywork. Do not expect it to replace that work.
How we scored these
Each shortlisted app gets a 0–100 score from three measurements, each ranked against the other 61: adoption (45%, rating count on a log scale, because it is the only public proxy for how many stores actually run the app), satisfaction (35%, the star rating pulled toward the shortlist average of 4.78 in proportion to how few ratings back it, so a 5.0 backed by 60 ratings counts about the same as a 4.9 backed by 2,000) and price (20%, a free plan taking the top of the band, paid apps ranked by their cheapest plan). There is no momentum term: the score tells you who is established, not who is growing.
Four honest limits. First, the category is Shopify's, not ours. We narrowed it to apps whose own name promises an SEO job, and we sorted those into the seven jobs above from the name and tagline. Many suites overlap with the specialist groups. Second, category-wide figures come from our crawl, and the crawl was a step behind: it still listed both removed apps as live until the live re-read. Third, the complaint analysis reads the 5,877 reviews we have crawled, not every review these apps hold, and themes were assigned by keyword. Treat them as a picture of what goes wrong, not a ranking of which vendor goes wrong most. Fourth, the score reads no feature lists, installs nothing and measures no rankings. Use it to get from 1,187 candidates to three, then test those three on a duplicate theme.
Our live scored ranking of the whole SEO category updates weekly. It keeps Shopify's whole category, review apps included, and applies no rating floor, so it will disagree with these tables in places. That is the floor and the narrowing doing their job, not a contradiction.
